OPEN Youth, Norwich Venue

We provided stylish, hardwearing cladding for custom-made furniture at the OPEN Youth Venue in Norwich. It was commissioned by award-winning architecture and design practice, Hudson Architects, on behalf of the charitable OPEN Youth Trust.

The project entailed facing the venue’s main reception desk, a series of irregular units in the foyer, a cantilevered juice bar, cafeteria counter and other purpose-built furniture, with our Cristallino White work surface material.

In keeping with the ‘dramatic and playful’ overall design, the main entrance foyer houses a 7m long, white reception desk, with a lowered section for disabled access, and a series of large, irregular static units, described as benches or ‘icebergs’.

The architects chose our recycled glass material, because it was robust, hardwearing, virtually maintenance-free and gave them the seamless jointing they wanted. Our unique manufacturing process means that the material is thinner and lighter than traditional stone slab, so the frameworks did not have to be over-engineered to withstand extra weight.

Certain panels on the iceberg benches were modified to allow subtle backlighting. Other custom units, like the enormous cantilevered juice bar and auxiliary ‘floating’ chiller units, were clad in the same Cristallino White finish, for visual continuity.

“The completed units look really good,” says Hudson’s Jonathan Tipper. “The white benches work exceptionally well in the reception area and the overall finish is really neat.”
